Here We Go

Today is Day 1 of the Whole Life Challenge. I'll write a few things about the challenge in this blog, but  my daily reflections will be in a separate blog I keep. If you're interested in following how I'm doing in the challenge, you can check out this site.

This morning I went back to my yoga on the beach sessions. I wasn't sure if I was going to make it. I had a late night on Friday and we meet at 8 a.m. on Saturdays. Anyway. I did make it, and it felt so good to be out there in the sun (though it was a bit hot at times) and get some deep stretching on. I think it provides a great counterbalance to all the MMA and weight training.

I tried two new poses today. One was a partnered boat pose. I think it was alright. I do need to make sure my back is straighter though.

The second one was a bit of a disaster. You go into a lunge and then hold one leg up with your hand. The leg and hand should almost be in line (under and over) with your head ... I couldn't manage that (yet). I almost didn't try it because it looked so difficult. Then I thought - why wouldn't I give it a go? What's the worst thing that can happen? I fall in the sand? I was also afraid that I wouldn't even be able to get my leg up -- but I did get my leg up and I didn't fall. My posture is all crooked and weird, but I tried. I'm going to use this first attempt as a marker to see how far I can progress with this pose.

In the afternoon I had a 1-hour BJJ session. It was fun. I'm really enjoying the fight simulation parts of my training because I get to see how the moves and techniques all come together.

me practicing my clinch followed by a leg-hook takedown -- I know, it looks like a big bear hug lol

My final workout of the day was the baseline workout that all participants of the Whole Life Challenge are required to do. Well, they don't have to do this exact workout, but we're all supposed to do something and then do the same workout in 8 weeks to check our progress. I did the official workout. I think it went alright. I still suck at running, but I gave it a go.

The workout was:
2 minutes - as many 25 yard shuttle sprints you can do (I did 12)
1 minute rest
2 minutes - as many rounds of 5 push-ups & 10 squats you can do (I did 25 push-ups & 50 squats)
1 minute rest
2 minutes - as many crunches you can do (I did 63)
1 minute rest
2 minutes - as many 25 yard shuttle sprints you can do (I did 13 -- which is surprising coz' I was so tired!)

I can't wait to see how I progress in 8 weeks!

Back to CrossFit!

Today has been a strange day.

I started off with class -- my students are really, really quiet. I do hope that it's just coz' it's the first week of class and not the trend they'll be following for the rest of the semester. I'll definitely put a stop to that!

Then, since my brother's paperwork to join my department still isn't complete (you wouldn't believe the bureaucratic bullshit we've had to go through. Let's just put it this way, he was supposed to be here in May -- that's how much crazy paperwork we've had to do) the director asked me to cover his class.

Ugh!!! The last thing I want to do is spend extra time prepping and teaching a class that's not even mine. Since he's my brother, I'll said I'd do it, but I wasn't happy about it.

Later in the afternoon I find out that my brother's paperwork was finally completed and that he's arriving TOMORROW!! My first reaction - oh no! I'm not ready. I thought D & I would have one more weekend to ourselves before my brother came to stay with us. Ugh!! Frustrating.

Then I got over it and was just really happy and relieved that the paperwork was finally done and that I didn't have to teach his class -- Yay!! :)

So, it all worked out, but not without me going crazy for a few hours.

What really made the day good -- going back to CrossFit!

Unfortunately, with my Kajukenbo training and my BJJ training, I don't have the time in my schedule to attend CrossFit regularly. The class timing is in conflict with my other training sessions. However, I've decided to drop in whenever possible. I almost didn't go (preparing stuff for my brother - converting a room to be his bedroom etc.) but I'm SO glad I did. It felt great to get such a crazy sweat on in just 45 minutes!

Our workout:
Warm-up: 30 burpees, 30 squats
Strength/skill: Back squats -- reps: 8, 6, 6, 4, 2 (40 kg, 50 kg, 60 kg, 70 kg, 80 kg which is 176 lbs)
WOD: 16 min AMRAP: 10 front squats (20 kg); 15 knees to elbow (my first time doing them); 50 high knees or double-unders (I tried the double unders - it was tough!! It's been about 4 months since I practiced any double-unders. I was so happy when I finally managed to do 10 in a row!)

Sweaty & smiling leaving CrossFit Q8

I really, really wish that I could go regularly. However, given my schedule, I'll just have to be realistic and do the best I can. The last thing I want to do is take on too much to the point where I'm not doing any of my workouts effectively.

Gotta be realistic and reasonable if I want to make sure I can do the work to achieve my goals!

LA Update Part 2 - Testing my Comfort Zone

Los Angeles was a great starting point for this vacation. The relaxed atmosphere and sunny weather  was perfect for getting over jet lag.

Cruising around Los Angeles

I used my jet lag to my advantage on the first day and hit the hotel gym around 6 a.m. Heading to the gym while on vacation is no longer a strange concept for me. I remember a time when I would pack gym clothes, with all the best intentions, but never make it to the actual gym. This time, however, packing an extra suitcase with just my workout clothes was worth it.

I wasn't impressed with the hotel gym. It was really basic, and I knew that although I could get a bit of resistance training in, it would mostly be cardio. With that in mind, the next day I head outdoors for a jog/walk around West Hollywood. Between the heat and the distance (6.5 km), I was wiped out by the end of that day!

Vacation Day 1 Workout

Caught mid-stride in West Hollywood

So, the gym and the outdoor walk were 'normal.' What was really exciting to me was going to Jean Jacques Machado's Brazilian Jiujitsu Academy. It was intimidating walking into an academy that I was completely unfamiliar with, putting on a gi (that I don't like wearing anyway), and then grappling with men I didn't know. I'm glad that D was there, even though we weren't grappling together. It was a really great experience. Even though it was just one session, I felt like I achieved a lot just by going there and doing it. I'm still working on facing my fears and building my confidence - this was a great way to test being outside my comfort zone.

My second big challenge was going to CrossFit. I really, really wanted to go to a CrossFit box while I was in Los Angeles, but I was scared. CrossFit is no joke. You push yourself to the limit - it challenges your mind and your body. Would I be ok going to a new box? Would I feel comfortable enough to perform? Would I be up to whatever WOD they had planned for the day?

I was really, really anxious heading to the Box. My heart was pounding, and there were a few times when I thought - never mind, I'll just turn back ... but I didn't turn back. I went in and gave it a go.

The people at CFLA (CrossFit Los Angeles) were great. Everyone was welcoming and friendly. We started with an outdoor run warm-up (run?? shit, will I be able to keep up) and got to know each other a bit before going back to the Box to continue warming up/stretching and of course our WOD.

Before doing the WOD, each one of us had to state our goal - whether it was to complete the WOD in perfect form, beat a certain time, etc. I said that I wanted to complete the WOD within 6 minutes. The coach said - no way, you can do it under 5.

Talk about putting on a bit of pressure, but it was exactly what I needed. I managed to complete the WOD under 5 minutes, and I felt great. Everyone was being encouraging and supportive. It was such a great atmosphere, and I felt amazing afterwards. My only regret was that I wasn't going to be in LA long enough for another CrossFit workout.

I made it on the board & I beat my goal time of 5 minutes.

Me and Michael Stanwyck - one of the founders of the Whole Life Challenge!!

What I Learned
I need to trust myself more.

Dieting and exercise are so much easier once my mind was in a positive place. Even though I know that I am strong and capable, I am still not confident in my abilities. It is this lack of confidence that makes me think (know) that I am not pushing myself 100% yet. I wonder why I could not tell myself - set your goal at 4 min 30. So what if you don't make it; at least put forward a challenging goal so that you can push yourself.

I'm still hesitant, and I need to believe - without hesitation - that I am up to the challenge. Having a supportive environment is really important (thanks Dizzle Rivera for encouraging me & believing in me). However, I need to also provide that type of support to myself.

This is something that I want to work on for this next year. By next summer I want to be able to walk into any CrossFit box around the world and feel confident that I belong and am able to compete.

In the Cards

I'm off again tomorrow, this time for about two weeks. This time around I spent a bit more time preparing. There are so many great websites out there giving workouts that you can do without any equipment. I made little notecards of different workouts. A lot of them are based on CrossFit workouts. I'm looking forward to trying them. If you're looking for some workouts to do at home (or that you can do while you're traveling) check out this link as well as this one. I foresee lots of squats and push-ups in my future!

Topsy Turvey

Day 1 of my summer holiday - what a joy! My goal was to sleep in until 9 a.m. (I had a late, late night on Saturday) and then go about my day. I don't know what I was thinking! I woke up at 5:45 a.m. feeling frantic. Not anxious frantic, just busy - omg I have so much to do - frantic. So I started tidying up the house. Once I got started with that, I had a hard time stopping ... and consequently I did not make it to the gym in the morning.

I did, however, do 100 burpees and 135 squats (Day 14 of the squats challenge) and I got a whole lot of stuff done at home.

I think my frantic-ness of the day was caused by a sugar/carb-crash following what I ate the night before. Although it may not seem like a lot, when you don't eat that kind of food on a regular basis at all, I think your body reacts to it much more quickly. These are the consequences -- I gotta live with them.

On my way to acupuncture in the morning my car battery light went on. I was already overdue going for its servicing, so I freaked out a little (the last thing I wanted was an overheated car!) so off to the garage I went, and then I was car-less. Ugh. How annoying!!

D was a sweetheart and came home by 4 p.m. so that I could take his car to Kajukenbo at night.

We did some circuit training before our martial art workout. I can really see the impact of my CrossFit & weight training paying off here. While all the other girls were totally out of breath (one even vomited - she was new to the class) I was feeling the effects, but I could keep on going without much difficulty. It felt good. I felt strong!

By the time I got home, washed up etc. I was exhausted. I had just enough energy to watch the Arsenal match and then I was pretty much ready for bed (and it was only around 8:45 p.m.). I lazed on the couch for a bit and was in bed before 10. I was SO tired!

-------

Headed out of the house early this morning to get my car. The car was ready yesterday, but I had to make a decision - get my car or go to Kajukenbo? Kajukenbo won. I had them keep everything ready for me so that I could get it first thing this morning. I was so happy to see it parked right at the entrance of the garage ready for me :)

Off to the gym --- though I met with a friend for breakfast first. We hadn't caught up in a while, so once again my morning workout didn't go as planned (I feel like such a slacker!!) but we both went in for Body Balance so at least I got that in!

This afternoon was my last CrossFit class until August. I'll be traveling soon and then the schedules will be topsy turvey because of everyone else's travel plans for the summer. I'm ok with that as I still have the gym. However, I will miss CrossFit.

Today's WOD left me completely breathless. OMG what a killer. We were supposed to do 3 rounds, but our coach stopped us after 2 coz' it was just deadly - lots of burpees, deadlifts, mountain climbers, push-ups etc. Definitely left me with a workout to remember for the rest of the summer! I'm hoping that while I'm in the States I'll get a chance to try out a CrossFit box or two. We'll see how that goes.

I've got a birthday dinner to attend tonight. They're all gym buddies so I'm pretty sure that the food will be healthy.

Picture post tomorrow!

Quick Summary

I didn't have to go to work either yesterday or today. I feel like I finally got a real taste of what my summer holiday is going to be like. All I'll be doing is working out, eating, resting, and alternating between studying for my personal trainer certification & working on my research. Definitely can't complain! Oh, and travel of course. Yes, there will be lots of travel!

I didn't get around to blogging yesterday. I was so wiped out by the end of the day that I barely made it off the couch and into bed!

So here's a brief summary of what I've been up to:

Here's what I did:

Workouts
Morning
- cardio warm-up (just a 1 km jog)
- weights almost 1 1/2 hours -- focus was 4 sets of 10 reps. I increased my weights with each set (except for the step-ups) and was pleased with my performance
- sat poolside for an hour though I didn't swim

Afternoon
- Kajukenbo practice for almost 1 1/2 hours

Evening
- Jiujitsu practice for 1 hour

See what I mean about being exhausted? It was fine. I didn't overdo it. I just think that not getting a good night's sleep the day before had me start the day a bit tired, and I never really recovered from that.

Burpees: Tuesday 30 & Wednesday 30
Squats: Days 10 & 11: 105 & 110 respectively (ouch!)

Today:

Morning
- Body Balance (1 hour)

Afternoon
- CrossFit (1 hour): strength focus: Deadlifts (lifting 120 kg feels good now (264 lbs); WOD: 4 rounds (30, 25, 20, 15 reps each) mountain climbers, hand-release push-ups, jump squats; followed by 100 crunches & 3x1 min planks.

I left the CrossFit box drenched. in. sweat!

Food

Yesterday:
Breakfast and lunch (see what I ate on Monday) (my usual banana date mix plus chick peas -- not the chicken wrap)

The only things different were an apple that I had as a snack & my dinner - steak with vegetables.

Today was quite different! I don't know if I changed things up because I was bored of the food or tired of posting the same photos!!

Breakfast: Scrambled egg
(1 whole + 1/2 cup egg white) + mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, and bell peppers

Lunch: Chicken with broccoli and 1/2 sweet potato

Dinner: Shrimp with vegetables

Snack: 2 oz of this dark chocolate

Other stuff: The main thing I accomplished today was that I signed up for my CPR and First Aid certification through the Kuwait Medical Association/American Heart Association. I'll be doing the course at the end of this month.

Chasing Endorphins

Am sitting here at my desk after CrossFit, still sweaty, arms still shaky and sore, and feeling totally satisfied. I tell you, there is something about CrossFit that gives you a different type of endorphin high. I mean, I get an endorphin high after all my workouts, but there's something different about CrossFit. I think a lot of it has to do with being able to track your progress. I think that's why I like lifting weights in general - when you see your improvements especially lifting more weight, you feel even more empowered and stronger. It's a great feeling. At CrossFit, when you finish a WOD you know that you've been challenged and that you survived. You give it your all, and it's ok if you're slow, just as long as you're doing the best you can. Slowly but surely you will improve. You just have to keep pushing yourself. That's another great thing about the CrossFit box - both the coaches and your teammates also push you and encourage you to do better ... to do your best. It's a great feeling. I left CrossFit today with a smile on my face, and it's still there :)

what's written on the wall as you enter our CrossFit Q8 box

Today's workout at CrossFit Q8 was Fran (21, 15, 9 reps of thrusters (30kg) and pull ups (still using a band but getting better) followed by 100 burpees for time (I finished in 9 min 36 seconds).

My afternoon workout was much better than this morning's -- just 5 km on the cross-trainer. I really need to make an effort to do some more focused cardio. Hopefully now that the semester is coming to an end I'll be able to do if after my weights workouts in the morning. I need to do something. I feel like I'm yo-yo'ing at this weight - +/- 1.5 kg. I'm frustrated!! I know I'm eating well, but I may have to revise my portions and my food prep too ... I don't know. I have to do something. If I want to see a change, then I have to make a change.

-------
Food for the day:

Breakfast -- are you bored yet? I know it's the same photo, but it's the same meal day in day out!

Breakfast #2: I got to work and realized I had forgotten to pack anything to eat. Not good! I knew I had a long morning ahead, so without hesitating I went to the cafe & stood there for about 10 minutes asking the guy tons of questions about the foods - none of them healthy really - and went for a chicken wrap. I had him cut it in half and I only took one half. I took 4 bites and then I was done. I just wasn't interested in eating anymore. I have not had bread in such a long time. It just wasn't that tasty plus I was full. I know it's wasteful, but I wasn't about to finish the wrap when I knew I didn't want anymore.

What I bought:

How much I ate:

Lunch: Chick peas

Dinner: Salmon with salad (balsamic vinegar & olive oil as dressing)

Dessert: Grapes

Today:
- Workouts:
  • Cardio at the gym - 5 km on the cross-trainer (38 minutes)
  • CrossFit at CrossFit Q8 (1 hour): Fran + 100 burpees
  • Burpees: 100 {3,830/20,130}
  • Squats Day 9: 100
  • Stretching: 20 minutes
- Food:
  • Breakfast: date/peanut butter/banana; 1/2 grilled chicken wrap
  • Lunch: chick peas
  • Dinner: salmon with salad
  • Snacks: grapes
- Other: Went through my wardrobe and got rid of all the tops that don't fit me anymore. Managed to cross off one more thing on my 'to do list'. Did lots of research on hotels in California; it's tough to decide where to stay!

Making Progress

I'll start with the two main highlights of my day --

First of all, our warm-up at CrossFit was either 150 regular jump rope skips or 100 double-unders. I felt like I needed to get warmed-up with my skipping before starting the double-unders so I went ahead and did the 150 skips (I'm definitely improving) ... and then slowly but surely I worked up to 100 double-unders!! The maximum number of unbroken double-unders I could do was 8, but nonetheless, I'm so proud of myself for actually completing 100 in a session. I just gotta keep working at it!

The second highlight of my day was buying UFC tickets for UFC 162 in Las Vegas for this summer!!

I'm so excited!! :)

I spent some time trying to figure out my routine for the upcoming few weeks. I've got a lot of stuff going on (as usual). I'm going to try to take advantage of my time in Kuwait during my summer vacation to really workout hard. When I first did my schedule I calculated that I was working out for almost 5 hours a day ... that didn't seem reasonable or sustainable, so I've had to modify the plan a little.

Wednesdays are going to be my easy days. I'll use the mornings to get stuff done around the house, catch up on blogging, and maybe do some of my Personal Training studies. Then I'll head to Body Balance class and get a good stretch in. It's been 2 weeks since I did a balance or yoga class so it felt good to get back into the studio.

A shadowed snapshot of me in class today (before class started)

Since I stayed home, my eating was a bit off in terms of timing. I only had my date and peanut butter in the morning, along with a cup of green tea, before heading to the gym. I had my banana before I went to CrossFit in the afternoon.

Breakfast/Pre-CrossFit snack - broken up through the day

After getting home at around noon, I was starving. I had a bigger lunch than usual - but still leftovers from yesterday - the last bit of fish soup (though a much larger serving because I wanted to finish it) plus the last bit of vegetables from Monday night's veggie mix.

Lunch: Fish soup and a Side of Vegetables

I had my banana and another cup of green tea just before heading to CrossFit.

Our CrossFit WOD sounded simple enough (they always do) ... and then you get started and you think, how in the world will I survive? Today's WOD: 15 minutes AMRAP -- 10 deadlifts (50 kg/110 lb), 15 box jumps, 20 burpees. I only managed to complete 4 rounds, and let me tell you, it was exhausting! [The strength portion for the day was push presses - 10, 8, 6, 6, 6 @ 20 kg, 30 kg, 40 kg x 3 ... I tried 45 and 50 but I couldn't complete the reps of 6 -- max I did was 3 reps at 45 ... disappointing!]

After I got home from CrossFit I was starving! My stomach was growling like crazy. I hadn't planned on that and I wasn't sure what to eat. I ended up grabbing 1/2 cup of raw cashews and 1/4 cup of raisins. It finished all too quickly, and it didn't really satisfy my hunger. I may need to work on coming up with a better small protein snack for times like that. It's tricky because dinner time is close, but a light snack just doesn't cut it in terms of taking care of my hunger!

Snack: Mix of cashews and raisins

I've come to realize that once Wednesday comes around, I'm feeling tired and I'm not really in the mood to cook. I need to prepare for this in advance and have stuff ready either from the day before or pull something out of the freezer. Luckily I had frozen a batch of shrimp and vegetables that I had cooked from a previous dinner. I know that frozen is not as good as fresh, but home cooked meals (even after being defrosted) are definitely a better option than order in or other types of packaged frozen dinners. The dinner tasted ok, though by the time I had heated it up, the shrimp were kind of overdone so they were a bit rubbery. The vegetables, however, were yummy.

Dinner: Shrimp with sweet potato, red bell pepper, peas, mushrooms, and some pine nuts

I'm definitely going to have some emergency meals handy so that I can at least have 1 cooking break during the week.

Dessert: 10 grapes

Today:
- Workouts:

  • Body Balance at the gym (1 hour)
  • CrossFit at CrossFit Q8 (1 hour)
  • Burpees: 80 {total: 3,610/20,130}
  • Squats Day 4: Rest

- Food:

  • Breakfast: date + 1 tablespoon all natural peanut butter, 1 cup of green tea
  • Lunch: big bowl of fish soup (2 1/2 cups); mixed vegetables (leftovers) about 1 1/2 cups
  • Dinner: shrimp and vegetables
  • Snacks: banana, green tea, 10 grapes

- Other: I made some progress on bookings for this summer. Still lots to book and schedules to coordinate!

Getting Back into the Swing of Things

I love Mondays because I do my MMA training on Monday mornings. I can't wait until summer vacation begins and I'll be able to add a few more days of MMA training - including some sparring - in the morning. Today I mainly focused on boxing, so donning my 'Boxing Attitude' t-shirt seemed appropriate ;)

An early meeting at work meant only a 45-minute workout for me this morning. I wish I could have gotten my butt out the door earlier, but it just wasn't happening. Despite doing my morning yoga to center myself and stretch, by the time I left the house, I was frantic :/ Must work on that!

By the time I got home, all I wanted to do was sleep. I did end up taking a 20 minute power nap and then I was up and out the door to head to CrossFit. I took some time off from CrossFit while my dad was in town. Now I really want to get back into it. Nothing beats the HIIT of the WODs. Our strength focus for the day was chest presses off the floor. Six sets (10, 7, 5, 5, 5, 5) I maxed out at 35 kg; I could have tried 40, but I didn't feel confident. Our WOD (workout of the day) was killer. I mean, at first it sounded simple, but by the time I was halfway through, I was drenched in sweat! WOD: 20 minutes AMRAP: 5 pull-ups (I'm not there yet, but I'm getting better), 10 push-ups, and 15 squats. I did 19 rounds, which comes to a total of 95 pull-ups, 190 push-ups (180 on my toes, 10 on my knees); 285 squats!!

I wore my new CrossFit t-shirt today -- I'm in love with this picture. We've got it up in the box, and I have claimed him as my CrossFit boyfriend. When I'm focusing on looking up during my squats, it's his face I see, so I use it to motivate me.

I'm so glad I pushed myself to go to CrossFit. There was a point when I almost didn't go -- I've got to remember that if I don't push myself now, then the changes I want to see are not going to happen.

My food for the day:

Breakfast (pre/post-workout) was my usual trio:

Lunch: Fish and Vegetables in Coconut Broth
I made a batch of fish soup on Saturday night for me to have during the week. I didn't have it yesterday, but I tried it out for the first time today -- not too bad! It needs a bit of tweaking (perhaps more lime), but it was rather flavorful, quite filling, and definitely healthy.
I haven't worked out the calorie count as yet, but I will soon and then post it along with the recipe.

Dinner: Baked Salmon with Veggies
Salmon + Sweet potato, bell peppers, and cauliflower

Snack: nuts after CrossFit/grapes after dinner
1/4 cup raw cashews & a tablespoon of raisins

Post-Dinner Snack/'Dessert' - 10 grapes

Today:
- Workouts:
  • Yoga in the morning at home (15 minutes)
  • Cardio-kickboxing at the gym (45 minutes)
  • Deep stretching at the gym & at CrossFit Q8, post-workouts (total 15 minutes)
  • CrossFit at CrossFit Q8 (1 hour)
  • Burpees: 30 {total: 3,530/20,130}
  • Squats Day 2: 55
- Food:
  • Breakfast: pre-workout - banana, 1 date, 1 T natural peanut butter; post-workout - 3 omelet muffins & 1/2 avocado
  • Lunch: 1.5 cups fish soup
  • Dinner: baked salmon with vegetables
  • Snacks: 1/4 cup of raw cashews and a tablespoon of raisins; 10 grapes
- Other:

My to-do list for May 5-June 5 is complete; now I just have to get to filling in all these blanks! I'm sure other tasks will come along, but this chart will definitely do for now!

Bits and Pieces

After many, many, many years of self-loathing, rock-bottom self-esteem, and just general dislike of myself and a lot of things around me, I'm finally starting to come around. The change in perspective has been uplifting and rewarding. I still have a lot of work to do, but I'm getting better.

I've realized that I used to be stuck in a cycle of negativity. Now, I'm working on a cycle of positivity -- I don't let the amount of work that's left to be done overwhelm me. Instead I look inside myself and realize that I have the strength to work towards those goals. I have the discipline; I have the ability. I don't find the hard work frustrating or irritating (though I do get impatient sometimes, of course). It's a challenge. With each success, I feel stronger mentally, physically, and emotionally ... thus the cycle of positivity continues. (At least this is what I'm attempting!)

I've had a good day.

I wasn't sure what type of workout to do this morning, so I went to crossfit.com and took a look at what had been posted there. My left knee has been a bit sore for the past 3 days so I didn't want to do any running. I ended up doing the workout Jackie. It was my first attempt:

1 km row
50 thrusters (20 kg/45 lb bar)
30 pull ups (I used the assisted pull-up machine so that I can do proper ones)

The entire workout took just under 9 minutes (I think it would have been less if I had all the equipment in one place, but my gym isn't set up that way). I read that some people completed the workout in about 6 minutes! Wow! Anyway.

I was amazed at how high my heart rate got to. Just 9 minutes of exercise, albeit intense exercise, and I was dripping with sweat and out of breath.

I started my physiotherapy exercises - basically leg extensions - to help alleviate some of the pressure from my knee. I think the step-ups that I did on Tuesday aggravated my knee. Perhaps it was too high ... anyway, it already feels a bit better. Not wearing heels to work today also helped!

Afterwards I did 100 burpees coz' I'm really, really behind.

I had a chill day today; enjoyed the beautiful weather, got a lot of unexpected extra attention and affection from friends (even my trainer greeted me with flowers this morning!). It was lovely.

On a not so romantic note, I started to tackle "the room" that has all the stuff in it ... wow, what a task, but boy did it feel great to get that stuff sorted. Also, because I'm a little crazy (and nervous about being so behind on my burpees) I did another 50 burpees at home, making today's grand total 150! :)

And finally -- I just uploaded my first video log!! I feel like such a dork, hahaha, but I wanted to do something different as I record my progress through the Whole Life Challenge. You can check it out here if you want.

My regular posting of daily exercise & daily food will start from Saturday again. I've been on track with my meals and workouts but yesterday this arrived from D:

It was a lovely surprise. I really didn't expect it, especially since he's still in NYC (but will be back tomorrow!) Although it's all fruit, there were some chocolate covered banana slices, and I tried them. Yum! I've never tried that combination before. There were also a few dates covered with dark chocolate and nuts. Dangerously good. I had 2 and had to stop myself from devouring the rest! I'm really looking forward to being back on the Whole Life Challenge. I need it!

Hope everyone had a lovely, love-filled day :)

13 in 13 Post #2: January Review & February Goals

First of all, thank you for your well wishes yesterday. I basically spent the rest of yesterday resting. I took a 2 hour nap (very unusual for me), cooked dinner, ate, lounged in front of the TV, then watched some more TV in bed until I fell asleep.

Again, very unusual for me, but I think I just needed a break and to disconnect from everything.

I woke up this morning feeling well rested and decided to kinda chill for the rest of today too.

I had a lovely breakfast with D, went to the salon and got a mani/pedi, went to Kuwait's 2nd CrossFit Games - organized by our CrossFit box, went and hung out with some friends in the evening. I didn't workout, and though I felt slightly guilty, I also felt really good just having a rest and not feeling frantic about rushing off to be at a workout or something.

I didn't hit all my targets for January, but I think I did pretty well. There are a few things that I need to modify in terms of my workouts.

My bronchitis + my dad visiting & D's parents visiting definitely added to the challenge. My eating was not as good as it should/could have been on those days. Still, I did my best.

Here's where I stand:

Target
Accomplishment
Lose weight each month, no matter how much
3 kg (6.6 lbs) lost this month
1.6% loss of body fat
7 inches lost total (1.5 around the waist yay!)

1,000 completed
Daily stretching of 15 min/day
22/31 days completed
2 outdoor runs
1 completed
Week 7 of C25K
--
4 body balance/Pilates/yoga classes
3 completed
15 cardio sessions
13 completed
15 weight training sessions
8 completed (started mid-Jan)
15 MMA training sessions
15 completed
3 nutrition studies quizzes
--
2 new recipes
2 completed, only 1 recipe posted
4 chapters & 8 articles to read
2 chapters & 3 articles read
Finish outline for April paper
½ done
Organize bookshelf
90% done

I'm definitely happy with my weight loss. I tell you, I fluctuated a lot through the month - at one point being 2 kg heavier, but I'm glad I ended at a new lowest weight to date! I just need to continue moving in that direction.

I did a total of 40 workouts this month, which I think is great, particularly because I didn't exercise at all from Jan. 4-12 due to my bronchitis.

I definitely need to get my act together with my organization and academic work - I guess I've been too busy exercising, hahaha.

Our task this month is about thinking simple and not getting caught up in so many details that we stray from what our original goals are. This falls right in line with what I what to accomplish in February. My goals for this month have definitely been streamlined into something more realistic but still challenging:

February 2013 Goals

1) Cardio Focus: 10 sessions [including 2 outdoor runs & Week 7 of C25K]
2) MMA Training: 15 sessions
3) Weight Training: 10 sessions
4) Flexibility Sessions: 4 [minimum 45 minutes]
5) Nutrition Studies: Complete quizzes 2-4
6) Cooking: 2 new recipes & post on the blog
7) Academic: Complete paper for March conference; complete reading 3 chapters and 4 articles; continue research interviews
8) Organization: Complete organizing bookshelf & Box shelves
9) Weight loss: End lighter than I started
10) Burpees: Continue working towards the ultimate goal of 20,130

Here are a few pix from the CrossFit Games. It was a perfect day to have the games - felt like spring; crisp blue sky, the sun was out, just a slight breeze ... lovely! I really wish I had trained to participate ... hopefully next time!
